The comb and wattles are a mulberry to dark black color. The earlobes are an amazing aqua turquoise blue. They have a walnut comb, their wattles are small to a medium size, but their earlobes are very small. They have been confused even with rabbits in peoples backyards! There’s cute fluff everywhere, literally from head to toe. To be quite frank they look like walking teddy bears. They mix well with my alpacas and pygmy goats! N.B I do keep them away from male ducks however. My tips here is if you see other hens pecking or specifically pulling the feathers on the Silkies head, remove the Silkie from the coop. That went for both the hens (females) and the roosters (males). What I found was when they were in the coop with the larger more active birds they were being bullied. I have mine in with my other bantams and that’s it. Yes with other Silkies and docile birds like the Polish chicken. Some access to dirt so they can bath in it but for the same reason as not having long grass, the mud will get everywhere all over the feathers etc. The Silkies being so fluffy and small, so having feathers touch the floor a lot of the time, this is where the ticks and mites and other nasty crawlies can get at them.Īlso they don’t like to be on the floor (and short grass is best), where its too muddy. If there is grass in the coop make sure its short, like with all the fluffy breeds within the grass there maybe ticks etc. They prefer confinement, and mine definitely do over being free range, I did have them free when I first bought them years ago and they didn’t like it, they just didn’t seem happy. Not a huge amount, however a minimum of 11 square feet per bird (1.1m2) that’s a minimum. I would say that you cant really have too many they all get along with other Silkies. They are happiest with 6 females to every one male, so a ratio of 6:1. Id almost say they come pre tamed there is some instinct within them from birth that just loves people.Ī minimum of two. They are so lovable and make instant friends with everyone they meet. I have owned several and each time i’m amazed at how quickly they warm to me. This is probably the most easiest breed to tame. Mine are the first to run over the fence to greet me and show me as much loyalty and affection as any dog I’ve ever had – thats saying something! How do I tame Silkie chickens? All their amazing personality traits makes up for the fact they aren’t the best layers of eggs. They will sit on your lap, feed from your hand, and enjoy cuddles for hours on end. Mine are so friendly and docile they are really recommended for anyone, old or young, but children absolutely love this breed. They make the best pets and will live for 6-9 years on average. The best allrounder, oh and I mention she is gorgeous! Temperament / Are they good as pets? The buff however, like mine below, is both fairly hardy in the cold and heat. The splash is neither cold or heat hardy so great for a moderate/temperate climate. The Buff, Blue and Back are all cold hardy, but not heat hardy, so ideal if your in a cooler climate or live in an area with a very harsh winter. They don’t do well in extreme climates (hot or cold) as their feathers don’t hold heat, keep the heat out or shed any water. The accepted colors are black, white, blue, buff, splash, gray and partridge.īelow is a photo of our gray we called ‘bear’. Whilst there are Silkies in cuckoo, lavender and even red colors they are not accepted as a standard by the APA yet. However, production once it does start will be interrupted by periods of broodiness. Silkie Chicken Eggs SizeĨ0-100 per annum When do they start laying eggs?īetween 18-25 weeks. The Bantam males weight 21oz (600g) and the females weigh 180z (500g). So in the UK where they are class as large fowl the males will weigh around 4lb (1.81kg). They are further distinguished by a crest, which all Silkies have but then they are further divided by either the bearded and non-bearded varieties – they also have five toes, rare in the chicken world. Ancient Chinese folk medicine attributed the black skin as even having potent powers! Silkies are one of the oddities of the poultry world with their nearly black skin, face, comb, wattles and bones, and their hair-like plumage in which there is no web.Īncient writers referred to fowl with hair instead of feathers and they are believed to have originated in Japan although information of them also comes from India, China and the Malay states. However, in the last ten or so years a proper bantam strain has been developed. They’ve made amazing pets ever since and are excellent broodies.Īlthough many people tend to think of them as just bantams, in the UK Silkies are classed as large fowl. The explorer Marco Polo in the thirteenth century, described discovering chickens with ‘fur’. These birds have been mentioned in writings for several hundred years.

To change the Wireless access password, switch from the Base Station tab to the Wireless tab, and type in the new password twice. If managing the base station from a new machine, you will be promted for the Admin username and password. Once the Airport Utility opens, you will see the Devices screen, and should select the device you wish to manage by clicking the Edit button after selecting it. If you will be managing the device wirelessly, you should first join the wireless network you plan to manage by entering the Wireless password when prompted. The Wireless password should be shared with users. The Admin password should not be shared with users. The Airport base station has two passwords: the Base Station Password to manage the Airport itself as an administrator, and the Wireless Password to permit access to the wireless network. For those, you'll have to find a Mac with an old OS installed and look for version 5 or older of the Airport Utility. Note that the newest ( v6) version of the utility will not be able to access the oldest hardware. You can also manage your Airport on iOS if you download the AirPort Utility from the App Store. If you have questions, feel free to ask away. One thing to keep in minding when "shopping" for new gear is don't rely solely on the manufacture's marketing hype. Once you got those established, it will be much easier to wade through the many choices. Regardless, before venturing ahead, be sure to take the time to fully understand your networking requirements. My only suggestion for you, at this point, will depend on your networking "comfort" level. Since then, with the features now available to me, I haven't looked back or would want to. I did this process, one base station at a time to ease into the new hardware, taking about a year to complete. so "upgrading" to a business-grade level was a "no-brainer" decision for me. In my case I have an extensive background in both computing & networking. and I don't think you will see any coming soon, or at all.įWIW, I started "retiring" my Apple base stations soon after Apple announced that they will no longer be selling them. Although they did provide a few updates since then, they haven't for quite a while. As you noted, Apple got out of the networking hardware business in (early) 2018. The bigger issue is not some much security with this base stations, but their longevity. "plug & play." Those of the former camp tend to be used by folks with mid-to-high-level networking knowledge whereas the latter, are for most folks who just want it to work. Think of it as a trade-off between fully user configurable vs. They were designed as consumer-grade products, and like all other products of similar design, have limited overall functionality. At present, the Apple base stations still provide (up to WPA2-level) wireless security.

They’re considered to be the worker bees of a Six Sigma project because they do most of the data collection and analysis work. Six Sigma green belts are usually at the manager level and report to Six Sigma black belts. Yellow belts are responsible for reviewing process improvements in support of a Six Sigma project.Ĭertification: To obtain a Yellow Belt certification, you must pass a 60 question exam. They understand the basics of Six Sigma, including the first three phases of the DMAIC framework: define, measure, and analyze. Yellow belts are Six Sigma team members who report to green belts. The yellow belt is the first level of Six Sigma certification. However, some universities and companies do offer this level of certification. Often, white belts are called upon to support an overall Six Sigma project but aren’t actually on the Six Sigma team.Ĭertification: Neither of the widely recognized Six Sigma certifying organizations, the International Association for Six Sigma Certification (IASSC) or the American Society for Quality (ASQ), offer a Six Sigma white belt certification. They’re responsible for connecting with the next highest belt (green belts) to solve specific problems at a local level. Six Sigma white belts are engaged at the first level of the Six Sigma process and have a basic understanding of Six Sigma concepts. These roles are identified by a hierarchical belt structure with darker belts representing roles that require more experience and training: white belt, yellow belt, green belt, black belt, and master black belt. Six Sigma projects are managed by individuals with specific titles, roles, training, and certifications. Using statistical analysis, Six Sigma teams work to fix processes so they’re 99.997% defect-free, which translates to only 3.4 defects per million. Today, companies in almost every industry use Six Sigma to improve their operations, bottom-lines, and customer satisfaction.Īll Six Sigma projects are managed using a set of tools and techniques across five phases known as the DMAIC framework: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. By the 1990s, a long list of Fortune 500 companies had adopted Six Sigma in an effort to increase quality (and profits) by eliminating defects, service failures, and waste. Six Sigma is a business improvement methodology that was first used in the 1980s by companies like Motorola and Honeywell. MindManager Desktop Application MindManager Download Library If they use Papyrus too, this may become an obsession after all. Except that, as Ryan’s therapist points out, there are sequels coming. Or more likely, it’s already been talked to death and we should just drop it. Why not keep it? Did James say to lose it and go with a lightly modified version of a font notorious for being used exactly in this way - as a boring default selected by the design-unconscious? Maybe it is some off-the shelf stencil font, but it looks good - all the letter cuts point the same direction, you have overlap between the letters that’s very suited to their shapes, and so on. Now, that’s not the greatest title type of all time (that would be Alien or everything by Saul Bass), but it’s pretty neat. Sure, they tweaked it a bit, but as Gosling points out: “IT WASN’T ENOUGH.”īut what bugs me even more is that the movie already had an earlier poster with a cool bit of type on it. Papyrus was indeed already overused in 2009, when the movie came out, and it would have been mocked regardless. I may not think about it every day like my friend Ryan, but it did bother me quite a bit at the time. While everyone sees Papyrus (or its knockoff version, Parchment) on aromatherapy bars, Indian restaurants, bumper stickers and so on, the final word on misuse definitely goes to James Cameron’s Avatar. He made a solid font and people who don’t know any better have, in their naiveté, adopted it unquestioningly. Like the creator of Comic Sans, Costello isn’t to be blamed here. It was not my intent to be used for everything - it’s way overused.” “So that’s when I began to see it turn up everywhere: mortgage ads, construction logos. “It ended up being a default font set on every computer since 2000,” he continued. “If I can take this time to apologize to my brother and sister graphic designers… I’m a graphic designer as well, I’m an illustrator… I believe it’s a well-designed font.” I believe the leading reasons that Papyrus is so awful are that it is a pre-distressed font, which just as in clothing is always bad. Helvetica is used far more often and still holds its own for its proper use case. “I took a look at it and me and my wife were like cracking up,” he said. I actually disagree that overuse is the leading reason that Papyrus is bad. Speaking to CBS News, he explained that he woke up to an inbox full of people telling him that the font, which he made around the turn of the century, had been the subject of SNL’s good-natured ribbing. And his SNL bit obsessing over the font’s frequent inappropriate use (particularly in the movie Avatar) has prompted Papyrus’s creator, Chris Costello, to address the issue. If you’re like me, whenever you see a sign that uses the most overworked font in the world, you point it out and yell “Papyrus!” You probably aren’t like me. That’s not to say the new CSS editor is bad, far from it. If you prefer a GUI over hand-coding CSS then Coda 2 might have lost some of its charm. As my CSS skills grew I eventually moved away from it, though I still find the interface beautiful. One of my favorite features of v1 was the CSS GUI mainly because at the time I was still learning to hand-code so it was a comforting bridge between the two worlds. Sure, it's not a deal-breaker but it could be more useful. Why? I often keep the local and remote database open but Coda only saves the settings for one so if I need to access more then I need to manually enter the settings for each one. One thing I would like is the ability to assign multiple databases to a site and save the settings for each so I can then select the one I want from a picker and open it in a new tab. Although my database needs aren’t that demanding I find I still prefer the standalone application to Coda’s, though I wish that weren’t the case. I haven't warmed-up to the new MySQL editor the way I expected to despite my initial certainty that I would use it since it's a scaled-down version of Sequel Pro which I use daily. In fairness I'm sure the “slowness” has to do with my perception and not any measurable lag in how Coda performs its functions. It also feels less responsive heavier, lumbering at times, no doubt due to the added clicking and different UI. I've gotten used to it (sort of) but I'm still conscious of it and it's a constant if mild annoyance. Immediately obvious was that nearly everything takes a click or two more than it did in v1 and all those extra clicks add up. Also, I rarely use version control collaboratively (it’s just me) and the bulk of my work is on the front-end, and to a lesser extent on the back-end with PHP. I am for the most part quite satisfied with v2, however not all is perfect. To lend some perspective to this article this is not an in-depth review, just a quick look. Like many I'm an admirer of software developer Panic and a daily user of their Coda programming editor since it's initial release in 2007 so naturally I was happy when after a very long wait Coda 2 was released. Also, you can sign-up to be a (potential) beta-tester. From Panic: Coda Next is very close to a public beta later this year. To grant full access to your academic results to the UWI. Figure 12.13 Depiction of reverse, normal, and strike-slip faults. Reverse faults happen during compression while normal faults happen during extension. Most strike-slip faults are related to transform boundaries. The third situation is where the bodies of rock are sliding sideways with respect to each other, as is the case along a transform fault (see Chapter 10). This is known as a strike-slip fault because the displacement is along the “strike” or the length of the fault. On strike-slip faults the motion is typically only horizontal, or with a very small vertical component, and as discussed above the sense of motion can be right lateral (the far side moves to the right), as in Figures 12.12 and 12.13, or it can be left lateral (the far side moves to the left). Transform faults are strike-slip faults. There are several kinds of faults, as illustrated on Figure 12.13, and they develop under different stress conditions. The terms hanging wall and footwall in the diagrams apply to situations where the fault is not vertical. The body of rock above the fault is called the hanging wall, and the body of rock below it is called the footwall. If the fault develops in a situation of compression, then it will be a reverse fault because the compression causes the hanging wall to be pushed up relative to the footwall. If the fault develops in a situation of extension, then it will be a normal fault, because the extension allows the hanging wall to slide down relative to the footwall in response to gravity. Figure 12.12 A fault (white dashed line) in intrusive rocks on Quadra Island, B.C. The pink dyke has been offset by the fault and the extent of the offset is shown by the white arrow (approximately 10 cm). Because the far side of the fault has moved to the right, this is a right-lateral fault. If the photo were taken from the other side, the fault would still appear to have a right-lateral offset. through central Yukon and into Alaska, show evidence of hundreds of kilometres of motion, while others show less than a millimetre. In order to estimate the amount of motion on a fault, we need to find some geological feature that shows up on both sides and has been offset (Figure 12.12). Ī fault is boundary between two bodies of rock along which there has been relative motion (Figure 12.4d). As we discussed in Chapter 11, an earthquake involves the sliding of one body of rock past another. Earthquakes don’t necessarily happen on existing faults, but once an earthquake takes place a fault will exist in the rock at that location. Some large faults, like the San Andreas Fault in California or the Tintina Fault, which extends from northern B.C. Figure 12.11 A depiction of joints developed in a rock that is under stress. įinally joints can also develop when rock is under compression as shown on Figure 12.11, where there is differential stress on the rock, and joint sets develop at angles to the compression directions. Figure 12.10 A depiction of joints developed in the hinge area of folded rocks. Note that in this situation some rock types are more likely to fracture than others. Ī fracture in a rock is also called a joint. There is no side-to-side movement of the rock on either side of a joint. Most joints form where a body of rock is expanding because of reduced pressure, as shown by the two examples in Figure 12.9, or where the rock itself is contracting but the body of rock remains the same size (the cooling volcanic rock in Figure 12.4a). In all of these cases, the pressure regime is one of tension as opposed to compression. Joints can also develop where rock is being folded because, while folding typically happens during compression, there may be some parts of the fold that are in tension (Figure 12.10). (right), both showing fracturing that has resulted from expansion due to removal of overlying rock. Figure 12.9 Granite in the Coquihalla Creek area, B.C. Fracturingįracturing is common in rocks near the surface, either in volcanic rocks that have shrunk on cooling (Figure 12.4a), or in other rocks that have been exposed by erosion and have expanded (Figure 12.9). A body of rock that is brittle-either because it is cold or because of its composition, or both- is likely to break rather than fold when subjected to stress, and the result is fracturing or faulting. |
